Thunderstorm & Lightning Detection

This part of the site shows current lightning strikes and thunderstorms in realtime. We use a lightning detection system which can show signals picked up that lightning gives out. This is energy in the form of a radio signal that is very strong, if you find yourself near a radio one day when thunderstorms are forecast tune into medium wave at around 500-600 khz, prefebly with no station in the background.
If thunderstorms are in your area then you will hear a loud and prenoused click or a very short but loud buzz every so often, these are the energy signals that all lightning strikes give out. Our stormtracker picks these signals up and with a direction finding attena together with strength analysis can plot an approximate position on the map.
The map below updates every minute automatically, but if you would like to see the data in an interactive form you can use the 'StormVue' application, just click here (pop up).

The image above (auto updates) shows the latest output from the system, new strikes are indicated by a blue cross within the past 2 minutes whilst after this time strikes are shown as yellow dots getting darker as the time ago they occured increases. Below is a TRAC report which gives detailed information on any storms its tracking.
